Terminal Cancer Patient Marries Fiancée

Columbus, Ga. (July 19, 2023) – Alexander “Alex” Santos was diagnosed with a nonseminomatous germ cell tumor in November 2022 and has been in and out of the hospital at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown ever since. Unfortunately, Alex’s body didn’t respond well to treatments and the cancer spread to his brain.

One of the 25-year-old's last wishes is to marry his fiancée, Heather. Creating a one-of-a-kind experience, staff from multiple departments, including Nursing, Patient Experience, Nutrition Services, Pastoral Care and many more, sprang into action to make the 7 Main patient’s wish come true.

They found a minister, helped the couple secure the marriage license, got decorations, staff also got the couple a wedding dress and a tuxedo.

They also asked the hospital chef to cater the reception.

When asked why get married now, Alex said, "I want to get right with the Lord before I leave.”

Alex, originally from Colorado, and Heather, born and raised in Columbus, met four years ago while in high school. They have a 2-year-old son together.

Thanks to caring staff members who have been like family to them, the couple said "I do” inside Alex’s hospital room.

“I’m with the person I love and wouldn't change anything for the world,” Alex said after the ceremony.

When Mr. and Mrs. Alex Santos walked into the waiting room for the reception, they were greeted by family and friends— some of whom flew in from all over the country to be a part of their special day.
