Piedmont Rockdale Offering 3-D Mammography Testing

Conyers, Ga. (Oct. 24, 2022) — Piedmont Rockdale Hospital is now offering three-dimensional (3-D) mammograms, also known as the tomosynthesis 3-D imaging. The 3-D mammogram provides more detailed images of the breast tissue, which can decrease the number of false positive diagnoses and increase the chances of early detection of breast cancer.

“Having access to 3-D mammography allows for women with dense breast tissue to receive a more detailed view, layer by layer,” said Stephanie Roberson, M.D., at Piedmont Rockdale. “This also reduces the additional follow ups as well.”

The new imaging unit allows doctors to examine the breast tissue one layer at a time, building what is essentially a 3-D image. A traditional two-dimensional mammography usually takes images from two angles and creates a flat image of the breast for doctors to review.

“We are excited to offer the latest in technology to our patients and to the Rockdale community, particularly regarding breast cancer, which affects so many women,” said Piedmont Rockdale Chief Medical Officer Monica Hum, M.D. “Our vision is to transform health care and we are delivering on that by offering 3-D mammography.”

It is important to get breast screenings because it can save a woman’s life. If you are at high risk for breast cancer, you should be getting a mammogram no later than age 35. You may start as early as 30, but may need a referral from your doctor.

“It’s important to not miss your yearly exam because breast screening is the most effective way to catch early breast cancer. It increases your survival rate on beating it and it’s the highest form of protection you have.” said Dr. Roberson.

Survival rates continue to increase due to early detection, increased awareness and improved treatment options. In addition to 3-D mammography, Piedmont Rockdale also offers:

Image-guided biopsies
Soon offering upgraded stereotactic biopsy. This will allow for improved accuracy and decreased time of the procedure
