Piedmont Heart Institute Names Ezequiel Molina, M.D., Surgical Program Director of Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support

Atlanta, Ga. (July 18, 2022) – Ezequiel J. Molina, M.D., is the new surgical program director of Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) at Piedmont Heart Institute. Dr. Molina joins Piedmont from MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute in Washington, D.C., where he was the surgical director of the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) and Heart Transplant Program. In Washington, Dr. Molina was also an associate professor of surgery at Georgetown University.

Dr. Molina will work in concert with Robert Cole, M.D., medical director of Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Mechanical Circulatory Support, to build on the reputation of Piedmont Heart for excellence in cardiovascular care.

“Earlier this year, Piedmont Heart reached the milestone of 100 heart transplants. Welcoming Dr. Molina will enable us to continue to expand our nationally recognized program for advanced heart failure,” said Charles L. Brown III, M.D., CEO of Piedmont’s Physician Enterprise. “We are confident his multi-disciplinary approach is an exceptional fit for Piedmont Heart.”

Dr. Molina will advance the program that David Dean, M.D., a top cardiothoracic surgeon, established and has overseen with great dedication for more than a decade.

Dr. Molina has been practicing medicine for more than 10 years and is board-certified in thoracic and general surgery. He specializes in heart transplantation, durable LVAD implantation and surgical therapies for cardiogenic shock. He is also proficient in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including surgical coronary revascularization, aortic aneurysms, valve surgery, and complex re-operative surgery.

Dr. Molina publishes and presents extensively in his field at national and international meetings. He has been an investigator in several LVAD trials. He is also a member of the STS-Intermacs Database Task Force, the largest durable LVAD registry in the world.

“I am excited and honored to join this incredible team. Together, we will continue Piedmont’s leadership in cardiovascular care,” said Dr. Molina.

Dr. Molina earned his medical degree from Buenos Aires University in Argentina. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, where he served as a clinical instructor focusing on heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support devices.

Dr. Molina is married with three young children. He enjoys cycling, running, reading and traveling.
