Piedmont Heart Named as Flagship Institution for Valve Disease Awareness Day

Atlanta, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2022) – Piedmont Heart Institute will celebrate Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, bringing attention to a disease that impacts as many as 11 million Americans.

As the flagship institution for this year’s international observance, Piedmont Heart will host a live virtual roundtable to educate patients and providers about heart valve disease and reinforce the importance of early detection and treatment.

From 2-3 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Feb. 22, Piedmont Heart will host a live session featuring a spectacular array of key opinion leaders and team members to discuss valvular heart disease as it relates to health equity, the importance of national data collection via registry participation, and a patient-friendly discussion regarding current treatment options.

Participants can register for the live session here.

The target audience for this event is broad and will include patients  - those who are at risk, have been diagnosed, or have undergone treatment - as well as healthcare providers,” says Amy Simone,  PA-C, FACC, director of the Marcus Heart Valve Center.

Piedmont cardiac surgeon Vinod Thourani, M.D., will serve as moderator for the expert panel including physicians from the Marcus Heart Valve Center, Piedmont Athens and the Association of Black Cardiologists. In 2021, Dr. Thourani was named Heart Valve Awareness Innovator on last year’s Valve Disease Awareness Day.

“Here at the Piedmont Heart Institute, we take great pride in our model of team-based multidisciplinary care,” says Simone. “We treat each patient holistically and develop individualized and personalized treatment plans keeping patient’s goals and wishes at the forefront.  We staunchly believe in the power of clinical research and are currently enrolling 28 trials which in turn lends to more treatment options and better clinical outcomes for patients.  We are committed to treating patients to live better and live longer.”

Valve Disease Day was established in 2017 by the Alliance for Aging Research to spotlight the importance of detecting and treating heart valve disease. Piedmont Heart joins a campaign of more than 100 nonprofits, advocacy organizations, professional societies, foundations, hospitals and heart centers—along with thousands of individual advocates—who are working to increase recognition of heart valve disease and reinforce the importance of early detection and treatment. Extensive outreach and numerous events will take place across the country and worldwide.
