Piedmont Rockdale Hospital to Host ‘Cook Out Cancer’ to Support Breast Cancer Initiatives

Conyers, Ga. (Sept. 17, 2019)-- Piedmont Rockdale Hospital is supporting the fight against breast cancer with ‘Cook Out Cancer’ on Friday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the hospital’s cafeteria patio. The event will be the first fundraiser to support the hospital and the Piedmont Foundation since Rockdale joined the nonprofit Piedmont Healthcare system in October 2017.

“We are excited to partner with our community to bring awareness to breast cancer services offered at Piedmont Rockdale,” said Laura Sistrunk, director of community relations for Piedmont Rockdale. “The cookout is a way for our patients, families, business partners and employees to support the hospital and the foundation.”

About one in eight women will develop a form of breast cancer in their lifetime. To detect breast cancer early, women over 40 are encouraged to receive annual screening mammograms. More than 8,500 mammograms are performed annually at Piedmont Rockdale, and through early detection, the rate of death resulting from breast cancer has declined 34 percent.

“We have a comprehensive breast health program including 3D mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, skilled breast surgeons, rehabilitation programs and support resources,” said Sistrunk. “We want women in the community to choose Piedmont Rockdale for their screening mammograms and breast health services. We will use the proceeds from the cookout to update the waiting room in the mammography department to create a more relaxing and comfortable setting.”

As part of the Piedmont Healthcare nonprofit health system, Piedmont Rockdale is community-owned and benefits from generous support through private gifts from the community. Piedmont Rockdale relies on the generosity of donors to make many of the hospital’s programs possible. Every patient who visits Piedmont Rockdale is touched by donors whose support makes it possible to buy new equipment, improve facilities and expand education programs.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and tickets may be purchased at the door or online until Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. by visiting piedmont.org/PRHcookout. Individual tickets cost $10 each. For more information, contact Laura Sistrunk at 770-231-5437 or laura.sistrunk@piedmont.org.
