Piedmont Healthcare Completes Purchase of Three South Metro Radiation Oncology Services Centers

Atlanta (Jan. 2, 2019) – Piedmont Healthcare recently completed the purchase of three Radiation Oncology Services (ROS) centers on the south side of metro Atlanta that became part of Piedmont Henry Hospital as of Jan. 1.

The centers are Piedmont Henry Radiation Oncology at Griffin, Piedmont Henry Radiation Oncology at Riverdale and Piedmont Henry Radiation Oncology, which began as a joint venture between Piedmont and ROS. ROS has been a leader in radiation therapy in metro Atlanta since 1975. In 2014, Piedmont partnered with ROS to combine state-of-the-art technology with compassionate, patient-centered cancer care in a community-based setting at the Piedmont Henry location as well as the centers in Griffin and Riverdale. Senior radiation oncologists Kim Vu Neisler, M.D., John H. Giesler, M.D., Sasha H. Wahab, M.D., and Joseph Waller, M.D., are currently providing services at those the three locations and they will continue to see patients at these locations and be part of the Piedmont Clinic. In addition, the three centers’ 30 employees are now Piedmont employees.

The centers will be integrated into Piedmont Cancer’s comprehensive care approach, which offers the full range of services, including medical oncology, infusion, cancer wellness, social wellness, and diagnostic labs and radiology.

Piedmont Henry CEO Deborah Armstrong credited ROS founder and Medical Director John Warner Ray, M.D., for the work he has done over the past five decades in treating local cancer patients.

“Dr. Ray is a pioneer in radiation therapy in Georgia and we thank him for the great work he has done over the years – work that Piedmont will continue to build upon in the years ahead,” Armstrong said. “As the largest healthcare provider in Georgia, Piedmont will bring its integrated approach to treating cancer patients who need radiation oncology treatment in their battle with cancer. Research shows that a fully integrated approach provides patients with the best outcomes.”

In 1983, Dr. Ray developed one of the first freestanding radiation therapy centers in Georgia. Among his innovations, Dr. Ray is most proud of the internal Evidence Based Peer Review program that he and his medical staff developed at ROS. Each week for the past 30 years, ROS physicians jointly review all new patients referred for radiation therapy.

“Radiation Oncology Services has been my life’s work and passion,” Dr. Ray said. “I am grateful for the patients who have trusted us with their lives and their care. Piedmont is the perfect provider to continue that high level of care and carry on the trust that our patients have placed in us.”
