Fayetteville, Ga. (Dec. 26, 2018) NRG Oncology is the combination of three organizations committed to research in the areas of breast and bowel cancer, radiation therapy and gynecologic oncology. Piedmont Fayette Hospital was recently approved as an affiliate member of Piedmont hospital for NRG Oncology, and can now have eligible patients participate in clinical research trials.
“Earning this affiliation proves that Piedmont Fayette has the right infrastructure in place to provide the right data and help make significant contributions to these studies,” said Trevor Feinstein, M.D., Medical Director of Oncology Research at Piedmont Fayette.
Through the clinical trials, researchers are looking to answer some important questions in cancer treatment, including the use of immunotherapy for rare cancers, the reduction of radiation therapy in treating some cancers and the accuracy of chemotherapy to avoid surgery in some breast cancers. The hospitals that have an affiliation with NRG Oncology provide a diverse population of different types of cancers and give the clinical trials the necessary enrollment numbers to draw conclusions.
Patients are not automatically enrolled into clinical trials. They must meet the strict eligibility criteria, and all treatment in a clinical trial is optional for patients. Even if a patient does not participate in a clinical trial though, he or she may benefit from the hospital’s serving as an affiliate site. In addition to all patients benefitting from advances in treatments that come from research, patients at Piedmont Fayette can see the hospital’s commitment to being on the forefront of technological advances.
