Kevin Brown

President and CEO, Piedmont Healthcare

Since joining Piedmont Healthcare as president and chief executive officer in May 2013, Kevin Brown has established Piedmont as a leader in clinical and service quality. Through an operating model that places the patient at the center of the organization’s decision-making, Piedmont has produced outcomes that rival some of the best in the country. Under Brown’s watch, Piedmont has frequently earned more A grades from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit industry watch dog that rates hospitals on quality, than any other system in Georgia.

Brown has been an advocate of transparency – both in clinical and service quality – helping to educate consumers to make informed healthcare decisions. Piedmont was the second hospital system in the nation to publish unedited patient reviews on physician profiles. Piedmont also has taken steps to improve access to care by expanding service offerings in our communities, including a low-cost virtual care option available anywhere and anytime in the state of Georgia.

Since 2013, the Piedmont system has nearly quadrupled in size, now serving over 3.4 million Georgians in more than 1,400 locations across the state. Among other offerings, the system now operates the largest urgent care and retail network in the state of Georgia. The system has also grown from five to 22 hospitals serving markets that represent more than 80 percent of the state’s population. During his tenure, net revenues have gone from $1.5 billion to an expected $6.5 billion in FY 2023.

Brown brought to Piedmont a culture of stewardship that is now ingrained into the daily operations. As a result, the total cost of operating Piedmont, on a per unit basis, was less prior at the start of the pandemic than when he arrived in 2013. Much of this cost reduction is attributed to dramatic improvements in quality, getting value out of scale, and the elimination of waste through process standardization and re-engineering.

As a non-profit health system, Piedmont makes contributions to the communities it serves. In FY 2021, Piedmont’s total community benefit increased to nearly $300 million.

Prior to Piedmont, Brown served as chief executive officer for Swedish Health Services, a five-hospital healthcare system based in Seattle.

Among his Atlanta community involvements, Brown serves as a Director of the Buckhead Coalition, Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals and the Holy Innocents Episcopal School. Brown has three grown children and lives in Atlanta with his wife Elizabeth. He enjoys the outdoors, playing golf, volunteering as a youth coach and spending time with his family.
