Augusta, Ga. (May 5, 2025) – Piedmont Physicians Breast Surgery of Augusta is excited to welcome home innovative Breast Surgical Oncologist, Takeyla Williams, M.D., an Augusta native, to its team of breast health specialists.
“Dr. Williams is an exceptional breast surgeon and physician,” said Walter J. (Wally) Curran Jr., M.D., Whitaker Endowed Chief, Piedmont Oncology. “Having physicians who reflect the demographics of their communities is important and linked to better patient outcomes,” Dr. Curran said. “We are very excited that she has joined the Piedmont Oncology physician team and is returning to where she was raised to serve patients of the Central Savannah River Area.”
Dr. Williams was inspired to make her career in healthcare and to become a physician by her mother. Dr. Williams earned her medical degree from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, and completed her residency at East Tennessee State University, where she was appointed administrative chief resident. She went on to complete her Breast Surgical Oncology fellowship at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 56 percent of the population of Augusta-Richmond County are self-described as black or African American. Research has revealed stark disparities in breast cancer outcomes among different racial groups. While breast cancer incidence rates among black and white women are similar, mortality rates veer sharply. Black women have a roughly 40 percent higher death rate from breast cancer, according to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Piedmont Augusta offers a full-suite of breast services for the communities it serves. These include preventive care such as mammograms and breast imaging.
“Our focus is to identify cancer early so that it is a treatable disease,” Dr. Williams said.
Dr. William's clinical interests include benign and malignant breast disease, breast cancer risk assessment, and risk modification.
The Breast Imaging Center at Piedmont Augusta provides mammography services that are accredited by the American College of Radiology.
“Being able to offer high-quality, specialized patient-centered care to women in this community, where they have their support system, is such a positive to their recovery,” she said.
At Piedmont Augusta, patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team, including specialists in radiology and genetics.
