Piedmont Columbus Family Medicine Residency Program Matches with 12 Medical Residents

Columbus, Ga. (March 29, 2023)— Piedmont Columbus Regional will add 12 doctors to its roster on July 1, the result of Match Week when candidates learn whether they’ve been matched with a hospital to complete their residencies. With those coming on board this summer, Piedmont Columbus Regional will employ a total of 36 residents.

“We are thrilled these new residents will be coming to Piedmont to continue their medical training,” said John Bucholtz, D.O., Director of Medical Education and Family Medicine Residency Program. “We are pleased to provide the foundation for a successful career as a practicing physician while continuing to fulfill our mission to care for the people of West Georgia and East Alabama.”

Although Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown is a large 583-bed hospital, residents enjoy the support of all major medical specialties, while providing patient care of the highest skill and sophistication. Core clinical rotations include Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Intensive Care experiences, Internal Medicine, Neonatology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics.

The new residents who will join Piedmont Columbus Regional this summer are:

  • Sangay Bhutia, M.D., Toledo, Ohio
  • Ruqaiyyah Hamid, M.D., Newark, California
  • Alexander Hatanaka, D.O., La Verkin, Utah
  • Christopher Hudspeth, D.O., Ponchatoula, Louisiana
  • Ashima Marwah, M.D., Columbus, Georgia
  • Julia Mattingly, M.D., Suwanee, Georgia (graduated from the Mercer University School of Medicine’s Columbus Campus)
  • Khadijah Ogunfuyi, M.D., Lawrenceville, Georgia
  • Ansa Riaz, D.O., Douglasville, Georgia
  • Peyton Stewart, M.D., Byron, Georgia
  • Gerald Wang, D.O., Johnson City, Tennessee
  • Todd Martin Wood, M.D., Columbus, Georgia (graduated from the Mercer University School of Medicine’s Columbus Campus)

When established in 1972, the Family Medicine Residency Program at Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown became the first of its kind in Georgia and one of the first in the Southeastern United States. More than 1,000 family physicians have graduated from the nationally-recognized program. It is a fully accredited, three-year program that emphasizes the development of clinical responsibility in a strong academic setting.
