Inpatient Geriatric Behavioral Health at Eastside

The Geriatric Care Units at Piedmont Eastside – South Campus provide a secure inpatient psychiatric facility for the treatment of senior adults experiencing acute behavioral health treatment needs. Since we are located at a full-service medical facility, our patients also have access to consultation by other medical specialists for non-psychiatric medical needs.

The Geriatric Care Units at our South Campus provide care with a treatment team focus. The treatment team consists of the attending psychiatrists, staff nurses, technicians, professional therapists and counselors, and other consultants deemed necessary by the treatment team. All these professionals have specialized training in the care of senior adults and their unique needs. They work together to provide an environment where the patient and their family can best work on specific treatment goals.

Our goal is to help our patients and their families learn new problem-solving and interpersonal skills, and to support them through the challenges associated with later life. Our staff is trained to use evidence-based practices to help our patients cope with life changes, with an emphasis on planning to continue the work of recovery after the inpatient hospital stay has ended. A structured therapeutic program is offered on the Geriatric Care Unit to provide patients with the optimal environment for recovery. Individual, group, and family services are combined to assist the patient, depending upon each patient’s individual treatment plan. Additionally, Piedmont Eastside Medical Center is one of the only inpatient mental health hospitals in Metro Atlanta that offers individual PT and OT evaluations and services to all patients within 48 hours of their arrival to our behavioral health unit.

Our inpatient treatment team works closely with outpatient behavioral health services, local mental health centers, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice providers, and other treatment resources to ensure that our patients have access to comprehensive community-based care after they leave the hospital.

Admission to the Geriatric Care Units

A staff of Master’s-prepared assessment and referral coordinators is available to our Emergency Department and medical staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These trained professionals gather certain health information for a determination by the medical director for appropriate admission, and to arrange outpatient referrals when needed. Emergencies should be handled by calling 911 or one of the crisis numbers listed on this page, or by visiting your nearest Emergency Department anytime.

If you have any questions regarding admissions, call our Assessment and Referral Center and speak with one of our friendly intake coordinators now at 770-985-6470. All calls are confidential.

Our mission is to restore the ability of adults to live and function as fully as possible and to adapt to the complexities of aging. The Geriatric Inpatient Program is a comprehensive, psychiatrist-supervised service for seniors who are suffering from emotional or behavioral problems.
