Atrial fibrillation

How do you know if you have atrial fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation is a very common heart rhythm abnormality in which the heart beats very irregularly and chaotically. It is often, but not always, rapid. Common symptoms include sensations of a racing or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath and weakness. Some patients have no symptoms.

An ECG (electrocardiogram) is the first step in evaluating a patient. A doctor's visit can determine if an additional evaluation or treatment is needed.
