Dr. Jim Latimer, MD, FAAFP

Specializes in Family Medicine

Jim W. Latimer, M.D. earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville and completed his family practice residency training at the McLennan County Medical Education and Research Foundation in Texas. He grew up locally, graduated from Stockbridge High School, and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Physics from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Latimer has been practicing family medicine for nearly 20 years, but many of his patients have known him for more than forty. His local family tree goes back 190 years and seven generations to some of the first settlers in Henry County. His great great grandfather, Dr. Ira Lawson Gunter, practiced medicine here in the 1850’s back when physicians made their own medicine from herbs gathered from the countryside. He actually treated the ancestors of several of Dr. Latimer’s current patients. Dr. Latimer still has the goal to practice like the “old country doctor,” who treats his patients the same way he would treat his own family; but he also wishes to harness the latest technology and medical expertise. Prior to joining Piedmont Physicians, Dr. Latimer practiced at McIntosh Trail Family Practice in Stockbridge.

Board-certified by the American Board of Family Practice, Dr. Latimer is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice. He takes great pleasure in building a rapport with patients, and believes that healing is facilitated by showing genuine interest and compassion to his patients. He sees practicing medicine like being a guide, at times walking alongside his patients as they travel the valley of illness or despair, until they can see the mountains of faith, health, and encouragement on either side.

Dr. Latimer and his wife Sharon still live in Henry County. The couple enjoys spending time with their two daughters, Sarah Kate and Rebekah. His hobbies include genealogy, photography, local history and writing a book about his ancestor, Dr. Ira L. Gunter.

Dr. Latimer welcomes new patients and accepts most major insurance plans.
