Athens, Ga. (September 22, 2025) – September marks National Fall Prevention Month, with a special focus on Fall Prevention Week, observed September 22–26. Piedmont Athens Regional Trauma Services is proud to join the nationwide effort to raise awareness about fall risks and promote proven strategies to prevent falls among older adults.
Falling is not a normal part of aging. Yet, falls remain the leading cause of serious injuries and death for older adults. The good news is falls are preventable. With the right tools, education, and support, older adults can significantly reduce their risk.
“Fall prevention is a community effort,” said Eva Mae Carrigan, trauma injury prevention and outreach coordinator for Piedmont Athens Regional. “We encourage older adults and their families to take advantage of local programs and resources that promote safety and independence.”
Piedmont Athens Regional Trauma Services, in partnership with Community Education, offers evidence-based programs designed to empower older adults and caregivers. One such program is Matter of Balance, a small-group class that combines strength training with fall prevention education.
In addition, Piedmont Athens collaborates with local organizations to offer Tai Chi classes, which are proven to improve strength, balance, and confidence. Community members can explore offerings at the YMCA, Oconee Senior Center, and Athens Community Council on Aging. Please note that a membership to the organization may apply.
The CDC’s STEADI initiative also provides excellent resources for patients and caregivers, focusing on modifiable risk factors such as:
- Gait, strength, and balance training
- Medication review and modification (in consultation with a physician)
- Home safety checklists to identify fall hazards
- Vision and hearing screenings
- Proper footwear for stability
