Jasper, Ga. (September 5, 2025) – Piedmont Mountainside Hospital is proud to announce Mason Woodard of Pickens County Fire and EMS as the first-ever recipient of its First Friday Hero Award.
Launched earlier this year, the First Friday Hero program was created to recognize first responders in Pickens and surrounding counties who demonstrate exceptional dedication, bravery, and service beyond the call of duty. Mason Woodard exemplifies these values through his unwavering commitment to the community and his impactful work with Pickens Fire and EMS.
Woodard was selected for going above and beyond his normal duties to ensure critically ill patients received the advanced care they needed. On two separate occasions, Mason personally transported patients whose conditions exceeded the scope of care available at Piedmont Mountainside—one to Canton and another all the way to Atlanta. These transports were outside the typical responsibilities of Pickens EMS, yet Mason stepped up without hesitation, providing continued care with skill and compassion. His actions likely prevented dire outcomes for both patients, and his positive attitude throughout the process was deeply appreciated by all involved.
“Mason’s dedication and service truly embody the spirit of the First Friday Hero Award,” said Nick Zelinsky, RN, Director of Emergency Services at Piedmont Mountainside and program lead. “We’re honored to recognize him as our inaugural recipient and to celebrate the incredible work of first responders like him who make a real difference every day.”
The First Friday Hero Award will be presented every six months, with nominations open to the public. Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving first responders by emailing firstfridayheromountainside@piedmont.org with the nominee’s name, agency, contact information, and a brief summary of why they should be honored.
