Cartersville, Ga. (July 24, 2025) – For Barry Smith of Pine Log, Georgia, life changed drastically in early June 2025 when a sudden, intense pain behind his right eye led to a diagnosis that would transform everything for him. What started as a migraine-like headache quickly revealed a grapefruit-sized brain tumor—and threw Barry into a whirlwind of emergency care, surgery, and recovery.
On June 7, Barry visited the Piedmont Cartersville Emergency Room, where a computed tomography (CT) scan detected a mass behind his right eye. A second scan confirmed he had a brain tumor, and Barry was quickly transferred to Piedmont Atlanta for specialized treatment. Just a few days later, on June 12, Barry underwent a complex, high-risk brain surgery performed by neurosurgeon David McCracken, M.D.
The tumor, which had grown rapidly and was pressing against vital parts of Barry's brain, required urgent removal. The surgical team carefully worked to remove the cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. Despite the risks, Barry's surgery was successful—and his recovery was impressive.
Expected to spend several days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Barry was out in less than two hours and discharged from the hospital just three days later, on June 15. “The doctor said he’d never seen a patient bounce back like that,” Barry recalled. “I felt like a champ.”
“I’ve never been sick in my life,” Barry said. “Never had a stitch, never been to the hospital. Then suddenly, I’m on the operating table with a brain tumor. But God is good—and Piedmont was amazing.”
Now undergoing six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, followed by monthly chemo treatments, Barry remains optimistic and deeply rooted in his faith. His favorite verse, Matthew 6:34, “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own,” has become his guiding light.
Barry’s journey powerfully demonstrates the unbreakable strength of family. His older brother, Bobby, has been a loyal supporter through every challenge, embodying the resilience and unity that define their family bond. Furthermore, his children and grandchildren have stood by him, emphasizing the lasting power of family support and love. “We’re going to make this journey together,” he said. “If it’s God’s will, we’ll come out well on the other side.”
He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Piedmont team. “Every doctor has been outstanding,” Barry said. “Dr. Shannon Kahn, Dr. Aaron Mammoser, Dr. David McCracken, and the entire Piedmont staff saved my life! I want to recognize them all.”
Dr. Shannon Kahn, Barry’s doctor, commended his resilience and spirit: “Barry’s strength, attitude, and faith have been inspiring to everyone involved in his care. His recovery is a testament to the power of early intervention, expert care, and the human spirit.”
Dr. Arron Mammoser, Barry’s neuro-oncologist, highlighted how crucial Barry's mindset has been throughout his treatment: "Barry's determination and faith have been as vital to his progress as the medical care he's received. His case reminds us that healing is not just physical—it's also emotional and spiritual. He's an inspiration to our entire team."
Dr. David McCracken, Barry’s neurosurgeon, added: “Barry’s case was both urgent and complex. His determination and positivity played a huge role in his recovery. It’s not often we see someone bounce back so quickly after such a major procedure. He’s truly remarkable.”
Barry’s message to others—especially children facing a brain tumor diagnosis—is one of unwavering hope: “Never give up. Even in your darkest moments, keep fighting. As long as you hold on, God will hold on to you.” His words are more than encouragement—they’re a lifeline, born from experience, faith, and a fierce will to live.
Looking ahead, Barry is dedicated to sharing his journey to uplift and inspire others facing similar struggles. “If I can help save even one life, it’s worth it,” he said. “I want to be sitting here 10 years from now, finishing this story.” His courage, faith, and gratitude reflect the core of Piedmont’s mission—to make a positive impact on every life we touch. Barry’s story is a powerful reminder that with compassionate care, clinical excellence, and unwavering hope, healing is always within reach.
