Newnan, Ga. (June 26, 2025) – Piedmont Oncology welcomes innovative head and neck surgeon and surgical oncologist, Mark W. El-Deiry, M.D, to its team of cancer specialists. Dr. El-Deiry will be based out of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. He will also serve as the founding medical director for Piedmont Oncology’s Head and Neck Cancer Program.
“Dr. El-Deiry is an exceptional surgeon, physician, and leader, and we are thrilled that he has joined the Piedmont Oncology physician leadership team,” said Walter J. (Wally) Curran Jr., M.D., Whitaker Endowed Chief, Piedmont Oncology. “His surgical and leadership skills will augment the services we can offer our patients. He will lead a multi-disciplinary program to serve Piedmont patients with tumors of the mouth, throat, sinuses, neck, or facial regions.

Dr. El-Deiry has been practicing medicine for over 20 years and is one of the most experienced head and neck cancer surgeons in the country. Prior to joining Piedmont, he was the Program Lead for the Head and Neck Tumor Program at Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University where he developed a unique multidisciplinary model of care for head and neck cancer, including the design of the new cancer tower in Midtown Atlanta, as well as helping that program achieve national prominence. Dr. El-Deiry is board certified in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He specializes in treating both benign and malignant tumors of the head and neck. His special interests include microvascular reconstruction of complex head and neck defects, post radiation complications in the head and neck, as well as treating rare tumors of the head and neck including salivary tumors and vascular tumors.
Dr. El-Deiry earned his medical degree from Rush University Medical College in Chicago and completed his Otolaryngology-Head and Neck surgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction surgery at the University of Washington in Seattle.
