Columbus, Ga. (April 10, 2024)— It was a busy third quarter of Piedmont’s Fiscal Year 2024 at Piedmont Columbus Regional with years of planning coming to fruition and state-of-the-art technological advances helping staff as we usher in new talent to provide patient-centered care to the community
Piedmont Columbus Regional’s Midtown Campus is undergoing a significant renovation and expansion over the next two years to increase its Intensive Care Unit capacity.
“There will be a vertical expansion next to the existing Midtown hospital tower,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional Chief Nursing Officer Cary Burcham. “The construction and completion later this year of the Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital, relocating those pediatric hospital beds to the future freestanding facility, has enabled this project to take shape.”
The 99,038 square foot project will include 43 new ICU beds along with a renovated 15-bed nursing unit. Construction is tentatively set to be completed in March 2026. Members of the public can visit Piedmont.org/ColumbusICU for an overview of the project.
Piedmont Columbus Regional went live with a real-time location system technology— an innovative solution designed to enhance operational efficiency and streamline asset management within the facility. The system provides real-time alerts if a high-value asset leaves a designated area or exits the premises.
“Each employee is able to gain real-time visibility on the location of equipment, enabling quick retrieval when needed,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional Northside Chief Operating Officer Laura Drew. “This reduces time spent searching for equipment, allowing more focus on patient-centered care.”
Piedmont Columbus Regional will add 12 doctors and eight pharmacists to its roster this summer. Medical school graduates from across the country and abroad apply then interview with graduate medical education programs nationwide before learning where they have “matched” to continue their education and training.
