38th Annual Jernigan Golf Tournament to Support Piedmont Augusta Stroke Program

Augusta, Ga. (March 26, 2024) – Piedmont Augusta Foundation will tee off its 38th annual Jernigan Memorial Golf Tournament on May 6 at Woodside Plantation Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.

The tournament is named for Harry W. Jernigan Jr., who founded University Health Care Foundation in 1978 to provide for the special needs of patients. The proceeds from this year’s tournament, recognized as the oldest golf tournament in the Augusta region aside from the Masters Golf Tournament, are designated to support completion of a comprehensive stroke program at Piedmont Augusta.

Piedmont Augusta has all the components in place for advanced medical intervention for stroke patients, including lifesaving surgical interventions such as thrombectomies and the region’s only physical therapists specially trained to rehabilitate stroke patients.

Additional training, staff support and more advanced technology will enable expansion of the service into a comprehensive program, according to Piedmont Augusta Neurosurgeon Cargill Alleyne, M.D.

“Time equals brain,” Dr. Alleyne said. “With the Foundation’s support, we have the talent and medical staff expertise to further grow our program and allow us to serve a wider portion of our community.”

The tournament will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start on Woodside’s three scenic courses -- the Jack Nicklaus Reserve Course, Reese Jones Wisteria Course and Bob Cupp Course at the scenic Woodside Golf Club in Aiken, which will be followed by dinner and awards in the clubhouse.

“Mr. Jernigan served faithfully as the Foundation’s president until his death in 1984,” said Piedmont Augusta Foundation Gift Officer Laney Mize. “We continue to ensure that Mr. Jernigan’s legacy lives on with this tournament. He would be proud that 100 percent of the proceeds stays in this community.”
