Piedmont Columbus Regional Announces Renovation, Expansion of Midtown Campus Intensive Care Unit

Columbus, Ga. (March 14, 2024)— Piedmont Columbus Regional has announced its Midtown Campus will undergo a significant renovation and expansion over the next two years to increase its ICU capacity.

The 99,038 square foot project, which was designed by Earl Swensson Associates and is being built by Brasfield & Gorrie, will include 43 new ICU beds along with a renovated 15-bed nursing unit. Construction is tentatively set to be completed in March 2026.

“There will be a vertical expansion next to the existing Midtown hospital tower,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional Chief Nursing Officer Cary Burcham. “The construction and completion later this year of the Bill and Olivia Amos Children’s Hospital, relocating those pediatric hospital beds to the future freestanding facility, has enabled this project to take shape.”

Construction will begin later this month and will generally take place from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Preconstruction work has already taken place as construction fencing is up and some parking assignments have shifted.

“We are blessed to have extraordinary critical care doctors, intensivists, nurses and staff that work around the clock within the ICU,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional CEO Scott Hill. “Our current Midtown facility has been in place since 1983, and we are looking forward to adding a larger intensive care space to provide lifesaving patient-centered care as we grow to meet the ongoing health needs of our community.”
