Piedmont Eastside Partners with GNR Public Health to Bring Mobile WIC Bus to Campus

Snellville, Ga (May 19, 2023) – Piedmont Eastside Medical Center and GNR Public Health are happy to announce a mobile WIC bus will be at the North campus on a monthly basis. The mobile unit will be used a resource to expecting mothers at Piedmont Eastside and open to the public.

“WIC directly affects child development by providing families-in-need resources to healthy foods and nutrition education,” said Dannah Burch, WIC director at GNR Public Health. “We’re thankful for Piedmont Eastside’s partnership to allow us to bring our services directly to families that qualify so they can access this support through our mobile unit. Together, we are encouraging healthy outcomes for children in our communities.”

The WIC Supplemental Nutrition Program is a federally funded health and nutrition program for infants and young children (including foster children) aged one to five, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers (up to one year), and postpartum women (up to six months). Infants and children must be younger than 5 years old and have a nutritional risk. The WIC Mobile Unit is a full-service WIC clinic on wheels, with the ability to do full WIC appointments and the ability to load eWIC cards with benefits on site. Certain federal poverty requirements must be met. A mother or child under 5 with Medicaid automatically qualify.

While at the bus, families will be able to get help through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) eligibility and certification process, be provided with nutrition education, participate in outreach events like a specialized farmer’s market just for WIC clients, and more.

Every first three Wednesday's of the month, Piedmont Eastside will host the WIC mobile unit to better serve our community, in an effort to give eligible patients eWIC benefits. It will be parked in front of the Women’s Center entrance.

“Our mission is to keep care close to home, so the families who need this assistance, will not have to leave the hospital to do so,” said Shakeia Ford, Clinical Manager of the Family Care Center at Piedmont Eastside. “The care a mother may need, extends beyond our walls, and I’m happy Piedmont Eastside wants to continue to cater to families to meet any need they may need.”

The bus will be on campus from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
