Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an adjunctive treatment in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen while enclosed in a pressurized chamber at greater than normal atmospheric pressure. While breathing pure oxygen, the patient’s blood plasma becomes saturated, carrying 15-20 times the normal amount of oxygen to the body’s tissues.

A doctor specializing in hyperbaric medicine will evaluate your condition and explain the benefits of hyperbaric therapy. This doctor works closely with your primary care physician to coordinate other medical care that you may need. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy must be used in conjunction with a total care program, including good nutrition and daily wound care.

Hyperbaric therapy is well known for its use in underwater diving accidents but also has beneficial healing effects on other approved medical conditions, including:

  • Air or gas embolism
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Gas gangrene
  • Crush injury
  • Decompression sickness
  • Acute Arterial Insufficiency
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Osteomyelitis (Refractory)
  • Exceptional blood loss
  • Delayed radiation injury
  • Compromised flaps and grafts
  • Selected problem wounds (Diabetic ulcer – Wagner Grade III longer than 30 days duration)
