Deputy Sheriff Named First Friday Hero

Muscogee County, Ga. (May 3, 2024)— Piedmont Columbus Regional has named Cpl. Charles McGhee with the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office the organization’s First Friday Hero for the month of May.

Cpl. McGhee was off duty at the Columbus Park Crossing shopping center when he saw a woman fall in the parking lot, hitting her head. He immediately provided first aid and called for EMS. The woman was disoriented and initially refused medical treatment. Cpl. McGhee did not leave the woman and was able to contact her sister to help convince the injured woman she needed to go to the hospital.

The sister later called back to tell Cpl. McGhee the woman suffered a brain bleed in the fall. The outcome would have been tragic if she didn’t go to the hospital for treatment.

A ceremony with Cpl. McGhee and hospital leadership will be held on Tuesday, May 7 at 9:30 a.m. at Piedmont Columbus Regional’s Midtown Campus Conference Center to commend him for his response. His story is also featured throughout the hospital on commemorative posters and Piedmont Columbus Regional’s social media pages.

Piedmont Columbus Regional created the First Friday Hero program in mid-2016 to recognize first responders each month who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

“Their line of work is often a thankless job and we want to make the community aware of our local heroes and all they do to make the Chattahoochee Valley a better and safer place,” said Piedmont Columbus Regional CEO Scott Hill.
