Piedmont Newton Opens Huge New Facility, Hosts Local High School Students for Lab Tour, Earns Grant for Car Seats and Gears Up for Annual Benefit Concert

Covington, Ga. (April 20, 2023) – The pace of progress at Piedmont Newton Hospital matches that of the community itself, bringing new opportunities for patients to receive excellent care close to home.

Over the last few months, the hospital has:

  • Opened 30,000-square-foot medical office complex in Eastside Crossing Shopping Center
  • Hosted Newton College and Career Academy/STEM Institute students for lab tour and pathology presentation, supporting local workforce development efforts
  • Earned another grant to provide car seats to Newton County families in need
  • Planned annual fundraising concert to support the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

“Each of these developments supports our goal of making a positive difference in every life we touch at Piedmont Newton,” said Norris Little, M.D., interim chief executive officer. “They reflect our continued commitment to expanding access to care and services right here in Newton County.”

The new medical offices about a mile from Piedmont Newton represent a $10 million investment by the hospital in the community. The Piedmont facility now anchors the redeveloped Eastside Crossing Shopping Center, formerly the Shoppes at Martin’s Crossing. The vast complex, a former Walmart, has the space necessary to expand the range of medical services Piedmont offers area residents close to home. It will eventually house cardiology, neurology, endocrinology, and rheumatology practices. Piedmont Physicians at Hospital Drive, a primary care practice, has already moved to this new location at the corner of Highway 278 and Covington Bypass Road.

In February, Piedmont Newton welcomed 40 students from the Newton College and Career Academy/STEM Institute to tour the lab and hear from Andrew Johnsen, M.D., a pathologist. This visit was part of a regular “Lunch & Learn” series with the school; each session focuses on a different hospital career area to inspire and prepare the next generation of leaders and caregivers in the medical field.

In early 2023, Piedmont Newton received a grant to continue work on car seat safety with the Newton County Health Department. The grant given by the Department of Public Health's Injury Prevention Program provides for a car seat and car seat education for any Newton County family that financially qualifies for the aid. Additionally, Piedmont Newton has a car seat instructor, Missy Braden, who checks car seat installation for any mother who delivers at our hospital.

A lot of hard work has gone into preparing for Concert for a Cause, the big annual fundraiser hosted by Piedmont Newton. It will be Saturday, April 22 this year at Legion Field, featuring the popular band Yacht Rock Schooner. Proceeds will help Piedmont Newton purchase the equipment necessary to provide the next level of care in the hospital NICU. Moving from a Level II NICU to a Level III NICU will enable more families to stay close to home while their babies get the intensive care they need. It’s not too late to purchase the $25 tickets to support this goal; they can be purchased online until midnight the night before the concert and in person at the event.

Piedmont Newton is focused on creating hassle-free experiences for our patients and growing primary care and specialty practices in Newton County. For more information on Piedmont Newton, visit piedmont.org/newton.
