Women’s Heart Programs Scheduled for American Heart Month

Atlanta, Ga. (Feb. 4, 2021) – February is American Heart Month and the goal is to raise awareness about everyone’s risk for heart disease and the steps to take for prevention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, so Piedmont Healthcare launched The Dottie Fuqua Women’s Heart Support Network in an effort to promote long-term heart health and wellness.

Piedmont Heart Institute seeks to educate women regarding their heart disease risk and to empower them to take control of their heart health. Lifestyle changes can reduce risk by up to 80 percent. The program started at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital and expanded to Piedmont Fayette, thanks to generous donations from Fayetteville resident and Piedmont Foundation Board Member Vicki Turner. The program further expanded to hire a full-time program coordinator and began serving Piedmont Newnan thanks to a grant from the Cigna Foundation. The Women’s Heart Support Network now has many free events and ongoing classes available to help educate women about their risks of heart disease and empower them to do what they can to prevent it.

Free, socially distanced workshops in February include:

  • Winter Favorites Cooking Class, Friday, Feb. 5 at 12 p.m. Chef Nancy Waldeck will present an online cooking class of winter favorites. All recipes are approximately five ingredients or less and are all 100 percent plant-based.
  • The first Heart Infused Kilometer Event (H.I.K.E.) will take place in person at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 on the Laurel Creek Trail at Arabia Mountain.
  • Grains and Carbs, Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 10:30 a.m. Lena Beal will lead an online workshop discussing the benefits of grains and carbs, including which are the best bread choices and where gluten-free fits in.
  • Facilitate Healing Through Music, Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. This online program will discuss music’s innate therapeutic ability to provide inner healing. Johnnie Proby, a therapeutic music practitioner, will help participants develop a relationship that supports optimal heart health.

There are also several recurring online classes offered each week. Strength and Power Fitness is a 45-minute class offered Mondays at 10 a.m. Guided Meditation is offered Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Adaptive yoga is offered on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. There is also a virtual walking and talking session Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. No prior experience is required for any of the classes.
