Epilepsy is a neurological condition involving the brain in which clusters of nerve cells and neurons signal abormally and produce seizures. Most patients with epilepsy are effectively treated with medications, and a detailed neurological evaluation is necessary to choose the right medication or treatment for each individual patient. This evaluation and treatment requires neurological expertise.
Up to one-third of patients diagnosed with epilepsy continue to have seizures despite taking medications. In these cases, the expertise of an epileptologist, a neurologist with specialty training in the management of epilepsy and seizures, and specialty testing is frequently necessary.
At the Piedmont Hospital Epilepsy Center, we offer a wide range of testing and medical services that are designed to evaluate and manage even the most complex epilepsy and seizure conditions. Dr. Lawrence Seiden is an epileptologist and the director of the Center. Since completing a specialty fellowship in Epilepsy in 1998, he has managed epilepsy and seizure patients ranging from newly diagnosed patients that are effectively managed with medications, to complex cases requiring multiple medications and surgical intervention.
There are affiliated neurosurgeons to provide surgical evaluation and treatments when necessary.
