Newnan, Ga. (March 4, 2013) – Piedmont Newnan Hospital opens a new Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center today, complete with two hyperbaric chambers, located at the Newnan Professional Building at 2401 Newnan Crossing Blvd East in Newnan, Ga.

The center provides a variety of services including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, debridement, vascular testing, compression therapy, negative pressure and the use of the most advanced dressing technology.

“The new center is a tremendous resource to the Coweta community,” said Michael Bass, president and CEO of Piedmont Newnan Hospital. “It offers the latest tools in both wound care and hyperbaric treatments, partnered with the excellent quality care our Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center team has always provided to its patients.”

For many patients, wound care is an essential component of treatment for a condition that affects the individual’s ability to heal. Diabetes, surgery, severe skin irritations, burns, traumatic accidents or impaired blood flow can all interfere with normal healing and require specialized attention and treatment, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

“Oxygen is administered under higher than normal atmospheric pressure in the hyperbaric chamber so patients are able to absorb more pure oxygen, which helps wounds to heal,” said Melissa Johnson, director of the new Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Piedmont Newnan. “Under the right conditions, the hyperbaric chamber can give the patient 100% oxygen.”

Johnson recommends patients who discover a wound that has not healed in four weeks or more ask their doctor about seeking treatment from a wound specialist.

“There are often other steps patients can take to help improve healing,” said Johnson. “These can be as simple as changing the amount of protein or salt in the diet. Our multidisciplinary team offers a wide variety of treatment and evaluation to meet the needs of each patient.”

The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Piedmont Newnan Hospital is accepting new patients and welcomes most insurance plans. For more information, call 770-254-3331 or visit piedmontnewnan.org.
