Macon (Oct. 4, 2021)- October marks the sixth year of the residency program recruitment at Piedmont Macon, previously Coliseum Medical Centers. The programs offered include residency spots for a total of 37 new residents each year in four areas of medicine: emergency medicine, internal medicine, transitional year, and psychiatry.
Through a mutual agreement process, residents are matched with the Piedmont Macon program and begin their one to four year residency programs. After completion of the program, many graduates opt to become attending physicians with Piedmont Macon and Piedmont Macon North. The residency program has proven to greatly increase the number of doctors who serve middle Georgia by retaining the doctors who finish their medical training here. Many residents have also advanced to prestigious fellowships in a specialty of their choice.
“The transition from Coliseum Medical Centers’ Graduate Medical Education Residency Program to Piedmont Macon affords us the opportunity to continue to build our academic presence in the middle Georgia area,” said Dr. Marcia Hutchinson, Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Graduate Medical Education (GME) at Piedmont Macon. “We are excited to begin our recruitment season and look forward to welcoming our next class of resident physicians to the close-knit Macon community in the summer of 2022.”
Although a large 310-bed hospital, Piedmont Macon still maintains the community hospital touch where residents get quality one-on-one time with attending physicians and specialty coordinators. That personalized training and attention is something Piedmont Macon residents rave about. Piedmont Macon attending physicians typically take only one resident per rotation, giving residents the best opportunity to learn and grow as a physician. Piedmont Macon also has a full-time scholarly activity coordinator who works one-on-one with residents on research and publication.
