Piedmont Fayette Hosts Successful Moving Day Event for Parkinson’s Awareness

Fayetteville, Ga. (April 30, 2024 ) — Nearly 90,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease each year. On Saturday, April 20, Piedmont Fayette Hospital hosted Moving Day South, a community walk at City Center Park in Fayetteville. The goal was to raise awareness and funds for the Parkinson’s Foundation and Ashley Schultz, Development Coordinator with the Parkinson’s Foundation, stated that Fayette event was the largest community walk thus far this year.

“We are so grateful for all of the people in the community south of Atlanta who supported this event,” said Paige Muh, Director of Community Relations for Piedmont Fayette. “Not only were funds raised to support the Parkinson’s Foundation mission, but we were able to honor loved ones and caregivers facing this disease and empower them to manage symptoms through movement.”

Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder that can produce symptoms related to movement, as well as symptoms such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and cognitive impairments, among others. It is the second-most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Movement tailored for people with the disease, can help mitigate symptoms and improve balance, mobility, and daily living.

Leaders at Piedmont Fayette are already planning for next year’s event which they hope will involve even more area residents and raise even more funding for Parkinson’s research.
